OBJECTIVEFutureworks Shops unites nine 21st-century production spaces across New York City. The program is part of New York City Economic Development Corporation's Futureworks NYC, a key component of the City's Industrial Action Plan to help emerging and existing manufacturers promote, adopt, and create advanced technologies and increase local production. Spearheaded by global innovation agency SecondMuse and Chelsea-based Imagination in Space, Futureworks Shops links together nine advanced production spaces throughout New York. Over the next ten months, hardware startups and entrepreneurs will be able to apply for subsidized prototyping and contract-manufacturing credits, studio space, and be invited to workshops and open houses.

A/D/O is a creative space in Greenpoint, Brooklyn dedicated to exploring new boundaries in design. At its heart is the Design Academy, which offers a range of programming to professional designers, intended to provoke and invigorate their creative practice. A/D/O is located in a 23,000 square foot former warehouse in Greenpoint, Brooklyn’s Industrial Business Zone. It has been converted into a space for creative exchange, with both public workspaces and desks for rent. Founded in 2017.
Bronx Innovation FACTORY
MIT CoLab, CommonWise Education and a half-dozen local partners are teaming up to build the Bronx’s first makerspace. Bronx Innovation Factory is a pilot that will provide the borough with free access to digital fabrication facilities, startup and product-design workshops and workforce training. This pilot will inform the development of a larger freestanding facility. Bronx Innovation Factory’s mission is to increase wealth and ownership among Bronx residents. Founded in 2017.
The Pratt Institute’s Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator is redefining the apparel industry to benefit the environment and society. BF+DA provides workspace, manufacturing services, mentorship and programs designed to build financial success alongside ethical production. The BF+DA is a community initiative of Pratt Institute, and over the past three years, it has supported over 40 emerging ventures and collaborated with close to 200 organizations. Founded in 2013.
Collab gives innovators and creative entrepreneurs access to prototyping and digital fabrication equipment in the heart of Manhattan as well as the mentoring and space to build their ideas. Collab has been able to generate millions in revenue for itself and its members by creating products and installations for its corporate clients such as Hearst, L’Oreal, Intel and the UN. The collective has helped launch more than ten companies with a combined valuation of $200+ million, creating more than 250 new jobs. Founded in 2009.
Craftsman Ave opened up their 1500 sq-ft space to help New Yorkers bring their ideas to life. Since then, they’ve had more than a thousand students come through for workshops in everything from product design, jewelry making, woodworking and prototyping. Craftsman Ave partners with instructors at Pratt and Parsons, and six of them were awarded Best Instructors by CourseHorse in 2016. Craftsman brings creatives together in an inspirational, fun environment and provides consulting support in industrial design and brand identity. Founded in 2015.
NEW INC is an incubator and professional development program founded by the New Museum in 2014 to support ambitious ideas and approaches to culture, technology, and business that strive for a more creative, diverse, and equitable future. Their mission is to foster cultural value, not just capital value. NEW INC serves a community of nearly 100 creative practitioners and entrepreneurs annually, working on a range of for-profit and nonprofit ventures across art, design and technology. Founded in 2014.
NYDesigns is dedicated to the success of design and hardware tech startups in NYC. Companies in their incubator get three years of private studio space and access to a network of mentors and advisers. Startups can prototype their design ideas in the 5,000-sq-ft fabrication lab. They also produce events and programs for a thriving community of creators and innovators. NYDesigns is a program of CUNY and LaGuardia Community College. Founded in 2006.
Voodoo Manufacturing fills the market void between prototype and cost-effective, scalable production of plastic parts. Voodoo serves both individuals and businesses with its Direct Print, Volume Print and API integration services to 3D print one to 10,000-or-more parts, generally in less than two weeks. Voodoo also offers design services to help businesses, entrepreneurs, engineers and artists bring their products to life. Founded in 2015.
Zahn Innovation Center specializes in the production and design of high-quality, low-cost rapid prototypes of hardware, electronics and software. With a range of technologies at their disposal, Zahn is a one-stop shop for hardware startup prototyping needs. Located on the City College of New York campus in the Grove School of Engineering and supports hundreds of innovators each year. Founded in 2012.
