Karen Wong is the Deputy Director of the New Museum, New York City, where she has helped build its reputation for entrepreneurial platforms for new art and new ideas. She cofounded the initiatives IDEAS CITY, which explores the future of cities with the belief that art and culture are essential to metropolises; and NEW INC, the first museum-led incubator for art, technology, and design. Both initiatives are models for the intersection of cultural and civic engagement.
Previously, Wong served as managing director of David Adjaye Associates from 2000-2006, where she was a key player in creating the foundation for an international architectural practice. She supports emerging architects in her role as a board trustee of Plus Pool, a self-cleaning floating public pool in the East River. In the 1990’s she founded Hobbamock, a Boston-based design firm committed to nonprofits and social causes.
She currently sits on the board of Rhizome and chairs the advisory board of National Sawdust, a non-profit music venue located in Williamsburg incubating new talent. She was honored in 2010 (Inspiration Award) by Apex, the largest mentoring and education program for underserved Asian youth in New York City. She writes on culturally impactful projects for various media outlets and speaks frequently on the role of the museum in the 21st century. She graduated magna cum laude from Brown University.
