PAUL SOULELLIS / counterpractice.com
Paul Soulellis is a New York–based artist, designer, and publisher who maintains his studio at NEW INC. He founded the research-based graphic design and publishing studio Counterpractice in 2014. He is on a one-year faculty term appointment at Rhode Island School of Design (2015–16) and is a contributing editor at Rhizome.
Soulellis is also the founder of Library of the Printed Web, an expanding physical archive devoted to web-to-print artists’ books, zines, and other printout matter. Through Library of the Printed Web, Soulellis publishes Printed Web, a semi-annual print publication of web-to-print art and discourse. Printed Web 3, featuring 147 artists, launched as a server directory on Rhizome and as physical artifacts at Offprint London at Tate Modern in May 2015.
In addition to working as an independent designer for many years—for clients including TED, Cornell University, Esri, and the Rockefeller Foundation—Soulellis maintains his own artist’s practice. He shows experimental printed matter at galleries, museums, and book fairs internationally and has produced site-specific, socially engaged book works at artists’ residencies in the United States, Italy, Iceland, and England.
