Valentin Spiess is founder and CEO of iart ag. Trained as an electrical engineer, Spiess has worked in new media since 1993. His earliest collaborations involved realizing media installations for artists. He also acted as technical manager for various festivals and theatrical productions. In 2001, Spiess set up iart as an engineering office dedicated to media projects. Since then, the interdisciplinary team has grown and specializes in every stage of development, including conception, planning, and execution of media solutions.
The company has garnered numerous international design awards, as well as an international roster of collaborators and projects including MegaFaces at the Sochi Winter Games, the Coca Cola Beatbox at the London Olympics with Asif Khan, the Light Frieze for the Kunstmuseum Basel with Christ & Gantenbein, the responsive tracking system for Hansel & Gretel at the Armory on Park Avenue created for Herzog & De Meuron and Ai Weiwei, and interactive books for the Gauguin exhibition at Fondation Beyeler, among others.
In 2016, Valentin founded the nonprofit innovation network, Fluxdock, extending iart’s interdisplinary practice to a network of companies by making infrastructural tools available to members and collaborators.
