Movers & Shakers is a collective of artists, activists, technologists & educators focused on using augmented reality to highlight underrepresented narratives. They are creating a suite of augmented reality apps designed to reframe eurocentric norms in the classroom, cultural institutions and public spaces toward more equitable representation. The team is working on an augmented reality monuments tour to address the racial and gender discrepancy in NYC’s public spaces. Their goal is to put the technology of tomorrow into the hands of communities who typically get it last. To that end, they have hosted public teach-ins, pop-up galleries and demonstrations in schools intended for people of color to see themselves in their technology.
They were one of 10 teams to win the Verizon 5G EdTech challenge, a national open call for creative uses of 5G in the education space. Through Verizon’s Product Accelerator they created UNSUNG a multiplayer AR learning experience that highlights female singers of color who have used their voices to advocate for social change. UNSUNG will be ready for 6-8th grade English classrooms by September 2020. They won both awards at the IFP VR Pitch Night and their work has been featured on TED’s homepage, Huffington Post, Afropunk, BRIC, Hyperallergic.
