Leela Shanker, Yu-Ting Wang

The Flint Collective NYC is a cross-disciplinary group of artists, designers and researchers investigating light as a tool for social impact. Drawing from the fields of architecture, lighting design, urban planning, biophysics, material science and environmental psychology, their projects address interactions between people, products and place through light culture. Founded in 2016 by Leela Shanker, the work of the collective has been internationally recognized, most recently by a 2021 Lumen Award from the Illuminating Engineering Society of New York for multi-site, light art installation, “OPEN”. Since a chance encounter between Shanker and Yu-Ting Wang at a Red Hook public space activation in 2020, the two have been avid co-conspirators in forwarding Flint’s dialogue on transformational experiences of community and the built environment. In translating expressions between sociology and biology, the language is light.
